How to calculate land areas for SLC components

Overview

These instructions explain how to calculate the land area applicable to Soil Landscape components identified in the SLC Component Table

Instructions

The following sample datasets are used to illustrate this calculation.
Table 1: Component Table (CMP)
Polygon
(SL)
Component

Occurrence
(PERCENT)
Soil Development
(DEVEL)
...other
CMP attributes
1 1 40 Brown Solonetzic
2 30 Brown Chernozemic
3 30 Brown Chernozemic

Table 2: Landscape Attribute Table (LAT)
Polygon (SL) polygon land area
LAND_AREA
(ha)
...other
LAT attributes
1 1,000

Joining the LAT to the Component Table via the SL field results in the following:
Table 3: LAT joined to the Component Table

1 1 40 Brown Solonetzic 1,000
2 30 Brown Chernozemic 1,000
3 30 Brown Chernozemic 1,000

The area of land occupied by each component can then be calculated with the formula
    component land area = PERCENT x LAND_AREA / 100
