Downloading Detailed Soil Survey Coverages

Detailed soil survey data can be downloaded using the
Metadata web application at
http://wms1.agr.gc.ca/cgi-bin/mapmeta?mode=browse.
Choose the "Query" tool and click on the
green (complete
dataset) or
yellow (incomplete dataset) areas on the map.
Click on the available Arc/Info dataset in the "GIS data" column -
this will download the zip file to a folder.
You will need to unzip (download WinZip) the detailed soil
survey data. Extract all of the files to a folder. You should see
up to three .e00 files (soil.e00, hydro.e00, civil.e00) as well as
some text files. If you already have some soil, hydro, or civil
.e00 files in this directory, you should rename them so that you
don't overwrite them when unzipping the new files. It is important
that the e00 filenames do not contain any blank spaces. You
should keep the word 'soil', 'hydro', or 'civil' in the file name
for clarity.
Importing .e00 Files
To load detailed soil survey data from e00 files into Arcview,
select the "Import e00 files" item from the Project File menu, or a
View's File Menu. Select one or more e00 files you wish to import
(press the Shift key for multiple files) and click OK.

Specify the directory you wish to put the coverage directory in.
It is important that your coverage name contain the word 'soil',
'hydro', or 'civil' . The name
should not be more than 13
characters long in order for the import to work successfully.
The status bar at the bottom left of the arcview window will show
the name of the e00 file that you area currently importing.

Once the e00 files are imported, you will be asked if you'd like to
place the imported covers into the current view, a new view, or if
you don't want to add the coverages to a view at all. Select one of
the options and click OK.
Applying Standard Legends
Once you have Soil, Hydro, and/or Civil themes in a view, you can
apply appropriate legends to the themes. In the View containing the
themes, click on the new legend button that appears in the button
bar.

You will be reminded that the theme names
must contain the words "Soil", "Hydro", or "Civil", in order for
the appropriate legends to be applied. If the theme names aren't
correct, click "No" and change the theme name in Theme/Properties.
If the theme names are correct, Click "Yes" to proceed. You will be
asked if you want to change the "Soil" legend - you might have a
customized legend for the soil themes in the view that you don't
want to change. This extension will order the themes correctly
(hydro and civil overlaying soil), and will apply appropriate
legend colours.

Opening Associated Soil Coverage Tables
To open the associated tables for a soil coverage, first make a
soil theme in the view active:

Then you can click the table button that appears in the button
bar.
This will load the CMP, LAYER, NAME, and MAPUNIT tables for the
active Soil themes.

At this stage, you may want to use the
Component Table mapper that
is provided elsewhere on this site.
